New Plymouth district will become the first area in New Zealand to develop an Age Friendly Strategy, thanks to the funding from the Office of Seniors and the commitment of New Plymouth Positive Ageing Trust.

Age Friendly communities are an initiative of the World Health Organisation (WHO). WHO encourages communities to consider just how age friendly their community is around eight key dimensions - housing, social participation, respect and social inclusion, civic participation and employment, communications and information, health services and community support, outdoor spaces and buildings and transportation.

Grey Power Chair, Roger Catlin said, “New Plymouth’s population is ageing and it is essential that our district meets the needs of the ageing population. This means working towards providing services, amenities and supports that will result in a district that is a great place to live, work, visit and age. “

So what does it mean to be Age Friendly? “This is not a strategy for older people,” said Positive Ageing Trust Chair Lance Girling-Butcher.” An age-friendly community benefits everyone. We all want to live in a safe neighbourhood, young and old want to be able to move freely around our streets and buildings, and we all reap the benefit when everyone in our community is active and engaged in work, voluntary activity and civic activities.”

To help the development of the New Plymouth Age Friendly Strategy, the Positive Ageing Trust is looking to talk with as many people as possible (across all age groups).

A survey has been developed. The survey can be found by typing or copying and pasting this link into your internet browser:

Focus groups will also be held where small groups of people can talk about what an Age Friendly New Plymouth looks like. People who would like to take part in one of these are encouraged to contact researcher Dr Louise Tester at or via 021 1651549.
